[Though I asked this question, I found an answer and thought that I'd share]

You can group numerous objects (ctrl-G), hold down control and THEN drag the dot-thing. That increases the lifespan of all the objects in that group. They can then be ungrouped (ctrl-U) so they can be animated separately.
