Holden still stayed sitting on the bench even while it was raining because he didn't really care about getting wet because he was happy about being with his sister and he said he liked the sight of watching his sister going around and around on the carrousel, he said it was such a nice sight. 2. I think this was a symbol of responsibility. You can compare this to the similar event that happened at Allie's place at the cemetery(?). When it started raining, everyone went away to find shelter meaning that they had to abandon Allie. Holden didn't want to abandon Phoebe because, of course, he didn't want to abandon her. Well, the main point is, he didn't want to do the same thing he did on Allie.

1.Holden stayed out of the rain while the other parents retreated under the shelter because they didn't NEED the water to purify them as a comparison to baptism. Holden needed it because all the filled his mind was that borderline of innocence and adulthood. But, to add to that, he also saw the world as a fake world where nobody ever reveals anything but lies. I know this sounds absolutely absurd, but think about it for a second... This scene is a huge representation of Holden becoming happy and accepting reality as is. Holden is at the carousal consulting with himself about his dream job, the catcher in the rye. When the rain falls, all becomes clear and he learns to accept the deterioration of innocence.
