The scar is a gash in the jungle cause by the "passenger tube" of the airplane when it crashed onto the island. The "passenger tube" was carried out to sea by the storm which was occurring at the time, leaving the gash behind. The choice of the word scar implies an injury probably symbolising the effect of humans on the previously uninhabited pristine island.
