In Making History by Brian Friel why does Lombard try to make a heroic figure of Hugh O'Neill?

Lombard tries to create O'Neil as a heroic character so that the Irish have some one in their history to look up to and say that they were helped by him. He chooses to leave out information such as how his wife Mable is English and makes it seem as though he is a perfect national hero for the Irish. He also does this to tell a story of O'Neil's life instead of just the facts as this can be boring and he insists that, that is what people want to know.
