Why Massachusetts Is A Good State For Cheap Car Insurance?

Drivers who are searching for cheap car insurance in Massachusetts have a number of benefits that are not available in other states. At the same time, drivers might also find that rates are higher than average in certain parts of the state because of historical and financial factors. Finding cheap car insurance in Massachusetts can be made much easier if a driver understands some of the discounts and other factors that insurance companies in the state will consider when determining the price of a policy. The first thing a driver in Massachusetts should understand about auto insurance is that it is partially controlled by the state through the Managed Competition program. This program provides a series of discounts that all insurance providers in the state must honor. These are mostly simple discounts that look at the age of a driver and the safety features of a vehicle. Optional discounts that are suggested by the state are implemented by many insurance providers even though they are not mandatory. Drivers in Massachusetts who are consistently denied car insurance by commercial providers can turn to the Massachusetts Auto Insurance Program (MAIP) for cheap coverage. This program is available for nearly all drivers in the state who cannot find insurance independently. The program connects a driver with an existing commercial insurer under the supervision of the state. Drivers who cannot hold a driver's license or drivers who have failed to pay previous insurance premiums cannot enroll in the MAIP program. Drivers who are able to find insurance on their own are also not eligible. The car insurance market in Massachusetts is fairly unique because the state has largely deregulated the industry. This has caused more insurance companies to work in the state because they are free to compete in an open market. The lack of regulations means that insurers are able to create and sell specific insurance products that are targeted to certain types of drivers without having to meet all of the insurance regulations that were previously in effect. This makes basic auto insurance rates lower. The policies still meet the state regulations for liability coverage and for mandatory personal injury protection, but can employ a variety of other mechanisms to give drivers better and more comprehensive coverage for less money. This combination of factors has made finding cheap car insurance in Massachusetts an easy and mostly transparent process.

How Managed Competition Has Changed Car Insurance In Massachusetts?

Massachusetts has been struggling with high car insurance rates for many years. For a period of time, auto insurance rates in the state were set by a government department that was dedicated to dealing with insurance. More recently, however, Massachusetts has implemented a system for auto insurance known as Managed Competition. This program partially deregulated auto insurance in the state while allowing the government to retain control over certain areas that contribute to the price of auto insurance. Since Managed Competition was implemented, the cost of car insurance through most of the state has dropped. Additionally, more auto insurance providers arrived in Massachusetts to give drivers more options for coverage. Although there has been some criticism of the Managed Competition program, most residents have benefited from the changes. Drivers who are considered a high risk have benefited greatly from Managed Competition. These drivers were usually only able to find insurance through the state run Massachusetts Auto Insurance Program (MAIP). MAIP provided insurance to people who could not acquire a policy elsewhere. Managed Competition creates an environment where commercial insurers are more willing to accept drivers who are considered a high risk. This benefits the state as well as the individual drivers who can begin to rebuild their damaged driving history with a commercial company. Managed competition affects auto insurance rates by mandating that insurance companies provide a set number of discounts that are regulated by the state. These discounts cover senior citizens, cars with anti-theft devices and drivers who only travel within a limited area. Some discounts also reduce premiums for vehicles that are equipped with passive restraint devices like air bags. A number of optional discounts can be applied as well. These are given for completing training classes, owning multiple vehicles and taking public transportation instead of driving. These mandatory and optional discounts are adjusted regularly by the state to ensure that policy rates are affordable. Drivers who are looking for car insurance in Massachusetts automatically benefit from the Managed Competition system. Rates still tend to be higher in Boston despite the incentives and regulations. Unlike some states, Massachusetts maintains the government run MAIP insurance plan so that drivers who have had many accidents or who have accrued more than 10 points on a license can continue to have insurance.

If you have a drivers license in two different states and your insurance company only has one drivers license can they find out about a ticket on the other one?

Yes, if they run your information through the interstate system. When you apply for auto insurance, the insurance company checks your driving history via your name/dob/social security/drivers license number. The insurance company can see tickets/accidents recorded in other states and will base your insurance rate upon your driving history. If you have a drivers license in two different states, you are committing a crime in at least one state.

Which companies offer affordable auto insurance to young drivers?

Auto insurance prices for young drivers are based on many factors. Is the driver a male or female, does the driver have good grades, does the driver live in a city or out in a rural area. All of these are factors in determining insurance rates. For the lowest cost, a young driver would probably do best to try to get insurance through their parent's insurance bundle.
