The identical twin brothers are called Sam and Eric, or Samneric for short, not Simon and Eric. In chapter 6: Beast From air Samneric simultaneously describe the beast, and I quote.... "It was furry. There was something moving behind its head--wings. the beast moved too---" "that was awful. It kind of sat up---" "There were eyes---" "Teeth---" "Claws--" "The beast followed us---" "I saw it slinking behind the trees---"

Simon is known as the philosopher of the island. He takes much time to reflect on inner turmoils. In this way, Simon reasons out that the beast lies within themselves. As the boys slip further into savagery and further away from civility they inadvertently ensue fear amongst the island. In their desperation to rid the island of the beast, they take on more savage tactics of animal sacrifice and two counts of murder in their futile efforts to expel the beast. The more savage they become, the more prominent the beast is. The boys refuse to admit that they are the causes of all the fear. For if they did, they would have to face the consequences of their actions.

Simon means that the beast, which the boys fear so much is part of them. It is hidden deep down in evey human: 'the darkness of human nature'. As the boys' savagery increases so does their fear of the beast and the beast starts to seem real. Simon is the only one to realise that the beast is not a physical beast, but a metaphorical one, inside each of them. Quote:'Fancy thinking that the beast was something you could hunt and kill! You knew didn't you? Im part of you? Close, close, close!' ----Chapter 8
