Matthew 1:16 Joseph is also shown as the son of Heli, also in the line of David, in Luke chapter 3. Heli was Mary's father according to historical documents. Since Mary, the daughter of Heli, had no brothers, she was an heiress of her father, and her husband Joseph, according to Jewish law, was therefore listed as his son. This also establishes Jesus' biological descendence from David, through His mother, Mary.
