Well in the fourth book he thought his father was a shepherd that he met, but turns out he was lying to him and he was never his father. I'm on the last book right now, and honestly I don't think they'll ever tell you. What I don't like about these books is that they don't describe Taran at ALL. Not even a hair color, or even an age!
