∙ 15y agoIt has been years since I read A Separate Peace, but in my recollection, there was a complex relationship between the two characters. There was simmering jealousy because Gene was not as naturally talented and favored. That is going wayyyyy back in my mind as I read the book 23 years ago....lol...but I very much loved it and identified with the internal struggle. It is all about psychology and the complexities of the dynamics of friendship. Hope this helps you some! Also: Finny had convinced Gene to go to the beach instead of studying for a trigonometry test, and Gene fails this test. This leads Gene to believe that Finny is attempting to sabotage Gene's academic career. The answer above mine is also correct, though to elaborate on that, not only was Gene jealous of Finny, he thought that Finny was competing with him. He felt (weather conciously or not) that he had to beat Finny, and the only way to do so would be to end Finny's athletic future. Finny, as Gene learned just before Finny fell out of the tree, was never jealous of Gene, Gene was simply so ashamed of his own envious feeling that he created envious, competetive feelings for Finny. Now there is the question though of why, after Gene just realized Finny was not competing with him, did Gene make Finny fall? This is the question in which i cannot answer for you.

He wanted to make sure Gene was still going to be his roommate and make sure that Gene still cared for him and wanted him as his roommate. While on the phone, Finny asks Gene what sports he is doing and is appalled when he says he is the crew assistant manager.
