He loved Johnny for worshiping him (as shown at the movies) and couldn't take the fact that he died.

Cruel, Heartless, and don't care about anything. But Johnny is the only one Dally cares about he doesn't want Johnny to become like him because Dally already skrewed up his life.
Well if you're talking about Johnny's plan to go turn himself in Dally's afraid that a few months in prison will make Johnny turn mean and hard, just like what happened to Dally.
