Mitosis is the type of cell division which occurs during growth. Growth in plants is restricted to special tissues called meristems. Meristems are located at the tips of the root and shoot and in the stem, between the xylem (water-carrying) and phloem (food-carrying) cells. Meristems at the tips of a root or shoot are called apical meristems. Meristems between xylem and phloem (in the vascular bundles) are called lateralmeristems. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meristem http://www.Biology-online.org/3/7_meristems.htm
