It means it is 14/24ths gold. 14 K is fairly standard for good jewelry.

A karat is used as a measure of purity in gold. There are 24 karats equalling a 100% purity in the gold. So with 14 karat gold that means there are 14 parts (14/24) is pure gold and the other 8 parts (8/24) is a separate metal, most commonly copper. 14 karat gold is 58.33% pure gold.
