Yes actually he is. He said that life is Sacred and has made adoption a part of the democratic platform. Watch the third Presidential debate of 2008 to see him say this. ---- The answer above is only partly true. What he said is that he would prevent late term abortions. But nothing about early abortions was said. In fact, he said the following statement which is recorded: "I have two daughters... and if one of them makes a mistake, I don't want them to be punished with a baby."

Well, actually that is all true. He is pro-life. It was evident during the debates on CNN. He would not want a ban on abortion because women should be able to do what they believe is best for them and their own lives and health. Some women would have no means to take care of a baby. That's why Obama is for adoption, because you could give the baby to someone who can take care of it if you choose life. ---- If you watch a segment on Fox News with Andrew Napolitano entitled Abortion and the Election, it will tell you that in 2003 Obama voted against the Born Alive law, which would have protected the lives of babies that had somehow survived an abortion. He also said he would not take any action against Roe vs. Wade (which is what the third comment above said). But it would seem that they contradicted themselves, because for the adoption to happen, the baby has to be alive. In that case, abortions couldn't happen. He may say he is Pro-Life, but actions speak louder than words. ______________________________________________________________________
Barack Obama believes in a woman's right to make her own reproductive decisions. However, he believes that abortion should not be the first solution to unintended pregnancies. He was a co-sponsor of the Prevention First Act introduced in 2007 to improve availability and education about contraception, health education, and other services to help prevent unwanted pregnancy. The education is to include both abstinence and safe sex methods.
His official position on abortion is stated as, "Barack Obama understands that abortion is a divisive issue, and respects those who disagree with him. However, he has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women's rights under Roe v. Wade a priority as President. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in that case."
Because of his opposition to attempts to overturn the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade, as mentioned above, he voted against a bill that, on the surface was for something he absolutely agreed with (the protection of the newborn in the very rarecases of live births in late term abortions), but that bill also had additional "tacked on" clauses that would have undermined the Roe v. Wade decision. It was only because of the way the bill combined the two issues that he voted against that particular piece of legislation. It was not at all that he disagreed with the main body of the bill. As a Senator of the Illinois Senate, he supported legislation to make it illegal to deny life saving measures to newborns surviving in those late term abortions. It is now a law in Illinois that all possible resuscitation and life-sustaining measures must always be employed in those situations.
President Obama is not pro-abortion. People seem to confuse pro-choice, which means believing a woman has a right to privacy and to control whether she reproduces, with promoting abortion. They are not the same concept.
Most people who are pro-choice would prefer couples prevent a pregnancy by using Birth Control responsibly, rather than terminate one. However, they also believe the government has no right to interfere in a person's medical decisions, including the right to choose whether to bear children.
