CKC is simple a registry for dogs. They allow registraton for Purebreds as well as mixed breeds. AKC is a registry for dog. The allow registration for Purebreds, but I recently read something about them possible adding mixes to their registry. What most people don't know is this is the same way AKC began. They were a registry for Field Trials. Over the years they grew and now they are the most recognized registry in the USA. CKC is working at becoming more recognized also. Things take time. They have been faulted for being a registry for Puppy Mills. In their early years they did have a problem and they are working to show they do not support Millers. There are more Puppy Mills who register their dogs with AKC. Why? Because more people believe that an AKC dog is better quality. The type of registry means nothing as far as quality. It is the breeder who determines quality of the puppies they breed. It doesn't matter what registry a breeder uses as long as the are responsible and are breeding to better the breed. In the past few years, there have been many higher ups from AKC, leaving to work with CKC. CKC does have working titles and they had been working to get conformation shows under way. The problem was not enough CKC affiliated clubs to promote the shows. There was once a list on their site that showed the qualifications for Champion once the registry started confirmation and any dog deemed CH would have also had to aquire working and obedience titles. I've never been a huge fan of American registries for a coule of decades. They are not up to the standards of countries like Germany. Most of the breeds I have raised and shown were German imports and I only bothered to register a couple of dogs with AKC, since I liked shows that were ADRK ( for my Rotties). Other countries just have better breeding regulations and requirements. Not like the bills running wild here in the US, where breeding of any dog will become against the law, but for instance, Germany has Breed Wardens and breeders have to answer to them when raising dogs. In the USA, we have only to breed a dog to a female and register the litter. No one shows up and goes through your breeding program and makes sure your dogs are quality or even purebred. There is DNA now which can help in controlling those who are not responsible breeders, but when someone sees that AKC they think they have the top dog. You can read both registries websites and decide for yourself about how you feel about them. www.ckcusa.com www.akc.org
No, they aren't reputable and don't check up on breeders' backgrounds. Anyone could register pretty much, and the CKC wouldn't care.
