Harris Park is named after John Harris who was, among other things, Surgeon General, Naval Officer (a specific title), Magistrate, Chief of Police, Director of Australia's first bank, The Bank of New South Wales, Landowner (of most of the promontory of Pyrmont/Ultimo and of 110 acres of the area now known as Harris Park, plus others.

He had no known offspring but enticed his nephew (another Harris) to come to Sydney by building him a house and transferring land title to him at what is now known as Harris Park on the condition that his first-born son and each first-born in subsequent generations, were named 'John Harris'. The house he gave him is still standing and is known as Experiment Farm Cottage after the 'experiment' by Governor Philip to determine how long it would take for a farmer to establish himself as self-sufficient.

The house is owned by the National Trust and guided tours are available daily except Monday.
