The Arabic word Islam is derived from the root s-l-mwhich is translated directly as peace. However, there are many translations of the word Islam. The Shariah (Islamic law) officially translates Islam as meaning "to submit to God's will".

I can say anything.Actions speak louder than words. I can tell you Islam is a religion of peace, I can tell you Islam is a religion of hate, I can tell you 3 + 3 = 9. Research for yourself. Refuse to believe everything you hear, and do research instead. If Islam is peace, Islamic countries should be peaceful. Look into life where Islam is the main religion. I don't care what a certain holy book says, actions speak a lot louder than words. Of course there are some crazy people of every religion, so don't look into one or two Muslims. Look at whole Muslim countries and decide for yourself. Look up Sharia Law.

Yes, Islam is a religion of peace and is calling for peaceIslam is an Arabic word that means submission to Allah (God in English, same God in Christianity and Judaism). The root of the Arabic word 'Islam' is 'Salem' that means being in peace. This means that by Islam (submission to God) to achieve peace in yourself, between yourself and neighbors, community, and the universe.

Quran says:
{And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing. (61)} [Quran, chapter 8, verse 61}
and says:
{Believers, all of you, enter the peace and do not follow in Satan's footsteps; he is a clear enemy to you. (208)} [Quran, chapter 2, verse 208]

Refer to question below for more information on Islam in its universal sense.

Islam Prohibits Violence and Aggression, and stands for Peace and Justice.
Islam clearly prohibits all kinds and forms of aggression and violence against anyone, except in self-defense. Islam is a practical religion, meant to be implemented in every aspect of our life. Therefore, it realizes the fact that a person who commits aggression and violence against others will not cease these actions unless they are deterred by similar actions taken against them.
Islam also places very high importance on justice, and allows for aggressors and unjust people be punished accordingly, unless they repent before they are brought to justice. At the same time, Islam encourages people to forgive those who have wronged them whenever possible.
Evidence of these ideals can be found in the Holy Qur'an, which is the word of God revealed to the messenger of God, Mohammad peace be upon him. It can also be found in the Hadeeth, the sayings of Mohammad peace be upon him, and in his teachings to Muslims. A few examples of this are shown below from the Holy Qur'an:
  1. "Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, and do not transgress; for Allah loveth not transgressors." (Surah 2, Verse 190).
  2. "But if they cease (fighting you), Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Surah 2, Verse 192).
  3. "But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in Allah: for He is the One that Heareth and Knoweth (all things)." (Surah 8, Verse 61).
  4. "The prohibited month, for the prohibited month, and so for all things prohibited, there is the law of equality. If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, transgress ye likewise against him. But fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves." (Surah 2, Verse 194).
  5. " ... and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment." (Surah 5, Verse 2).
  6. "Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate!" (Surah 41, Verse 34).
  7. "O ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do." (Surah 4, Verse 135).
  8. "God advocates justice, charity, and regarding the relatives. And He forbids evil, vice, and transgression. He enlightens you, that you may take heed." (Surah 16, Verse 90).
  9. "And if ye do punish them, punish them no worse than they punished you: but if ye show patience, that is indeed the best (course) for those who are patient." (Surah 16, Verse 126).
  • The first three verses above instruct Muslims to fight those who fight them, and not to commit aggression first, as God does not like transgressors. They also instruct Muslims to stop fighting those who wish to cease fighting them, and to accept peace with the enemy who becomes inclined towards peace.
  • The fourth verse mentioned above instructs Muslims that if someone transgresses against them, they should respond to them likewise, and it reminds Muslims to fear God and to restrain themselves to this limit.
  • The fifth verse reminds Muslims not to let hatred of some people for past reasons to lead them to transgress against those people or be hostile towards them. It also instructs us to help each other in good and righteous actions, and not to cooperate in aggression and sin, and it reminds them finally of the strict punishment of God to encourage them to abide by these principles.
  • The sixth verse reminds us that goodness and evil are never equal, and that we should repel evil with good actions. This means that when someone is unjust to us or commits evil against us, we are encouraged to respond with kind and good actions, so that the hatred between us and that person will evaporate and will become an intimate friendship!
  • The seventh verse mentioned reminds us to stand up for justice, even if it is against ourselves or our family, and even if it is against those who are rich or powerful, because justice applies to everyone. It also reminds us that God knows everything we do, and so if we act unjustly even in our hearts, God knows what we did and we will be accountable for that.
  • The eighth verse informs us that God enjoins us to follow justice, and that God forbids us from committing evil, vice and transgression.
  • The ninth and final verse reminds Muslims that if they are punished, that they may only respond with the same punishment and not to go over this limit. However, they are reminded that forgiveness and patience is the best course of action.

These are the wonderful ideals of Islam:
  • To pursue peace with everyone including past enemies, except when they fight the Muslims and refuse peace, then Muslims are allowed to fight in self-defense.
  • To ensure that we always apply justice and never transgress against others even if they are our enemies.
  • To repel evil actions with good actions, in order to replace hatred with an intimate friendship.
  • To respond to punishment with the same punishment, but that forgiveness and patience is even better than retaliation.

When are Muslims Permitted to Fight a War?
As stated earlier, Islam is a very practical religion. It is not just about fake ideals that do not work. It is a religion that is meant to be implemented 100% in all actions of the Muslims life, and it is meant to promote peace and justice in the world.
Therefore, Islam does allow Muslims to go to war, as mentioned earlier, in certain circumstances. This includes self-defence, and to remove aggression and injustice that has befallen people and to save them from their oppressors. The verses that tell Muslims to fight those who fight them were mentioned earlier. Below is the verse in the holy Qur'an that allows Muslims to fight against injustice.

"Permission [to fight] is granted to those who are being persecuted, since injustice has befallen them, and God is certainly able to support them [with victory].
They were evicted from their homes unjustly, for no reason other than saying, "Our Lord is God." If it were not for God's supporting of some people against others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques - where the name of God is commemorated frequently - would have been destroyed. Absolutely, God supports those who support Him. God is Powerful, Almighty." (Surah 22, Verses 39-40).

This verse gives permission to those Muslims who fall under oppressive, unjust rule, and those Muslims who are being persecuted to fight to remove this oppression.

Does Islam Permit Killing Civilians?
Never. Even in times of war, the Muslim must respect his adversaries? humanity. Brutal and barbaric atrocities are prohibited in Islam. Islam condemns barbaric killing of any human being. Therefore, Islam does not permit the mutilation of the bodies of the dead enemy soldiers.
Also, Islam prohibits the targeting and killing of all civilians, especially women, children, the elderly, and religious clergy. Enemies, even at time of war, must be treated justly. Prisoners of war have basic human rights, as stated in the Shariah (Islamic Law), and must be provided and cared for and not humiliated in any way.
The following verses touch on some of these issues:

  • "O Prophet! say to those who are captives in your hands: If Allah findeth any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than what has been taken from you, and He will forgive you: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Surah 8, Verse 70).
  • And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive, (Saying), We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks." (Surah 76, Verses 8-9).

In addition, the following were the instructions of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to Muslims who are forced to fight a war:
  • "Do not kill women or children or non-combatants and do not kill old people or religious people,'' and he mentioned priests, nuns and rabbis. And he said, "Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees and do not poison the wells of your enemies."

There are many more sayings and teachings of Prophet Mohammad that instruct Muslims on these issues.

In addition to all the above, Islam prohibits oppresion, revenge or injustice to the people of the enemy in case of victory against them. Nor must there be control over the sources of the wealth of the nation or people, or even establishment of colonial regimes. Justice and freedom must be established. Tolerance towards cultures and peoples is to be respected at all times.

Answer 2
I consider it so. Please refer to my following article.
After the tragedies of the 11th of September 2001 and the invasion of Iraq many people are arguing that the Qu'ran and Islam itself teaches that a state of endless war exists between Muslims and 'Infidels' (who are usually defined by these folk as being Christians and Jews.)

In support of their arguments they pull quotes from the Qu'ran which seem to support their position, but do they really?

In this article I want to show the deceitful way in which these folk argue, either out of ignorance on their part or from a desire to stir up hatred against folk.

This topic is huge and so I intend here to look at only ONE of the Qu'ranic verses these folk take out of context and it is my intention to place the verse back into context. And then to show, by commentary and quote from the Qu'ran itself, the poverty of the argument which declares that the Qu'ran does indeed teach endless war against unbelievers.

One of the Suras (chapters) of the Qu'ran which are often quoted is the following.

Sura 9:29-30 , "Make War on the Christians and the Jews...Do battle with them!" "Kill those who join other Gods with Allah wherever ye shall find them, and lay wait for them with every kind of ambush: but if they shall convert to Islam then let them go their way."

All of the chapters of the Qu'ran have a context which explains why they were revealed by Muhammad. Here is the context of Sura 9

This chapter of the Qu'ran deals with treaty obligations between the Muslims and the Arab idolaters and also talks about what the Muslims should do if attacked by the People of the Book. The Idolaters had repeatedly broken their treaties of peace with the Muslims and in this Sura they are told what the consequences will be to them for these acts. As well the Jews and Christians are warned of what will happen should they try to intervene in Muslim affairs (verses 29-30)

Now because it is verses 29-30 that are quoted, I add here a commentary by Maulana Muhammad Ali on those specific verses.

". . . 29a. The last word on the wars with the idolaters of Arabia having been said, this verse introduces the subject of fighting with the followers of the Book. . . . The Qu'ran neither required that the idolaters should be compelled to accept Islam, nor was it in any way its object to bring the Christians into subjection. On the other hand, the idolaters wanted to suppress Islam by the sword, and the Christians first moved themselves to bring Muslim Arabia under subjection. The fate of each was, therefore, according to what it intended for the Muslims. . . . It may also be added that the permission to fight, as given to the Muslims, is subject to the condition that the enemy should first take up the sword, Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you (2:190). . . The Holy Prophet never overstepped this limit, nor did his followers. He fought against the Arabs when they took up the sword to destroy the Muslims, and he led an expedition against the Christians when the Roman Empire first mobilised its forces with the object of subjugating the Muslims. And so scrupulous was he that, when he found that the enemy had not yet taken the initiative, he did not attack the Roman Empire, but returned without fighting. . . ."

So then let us look at this Sura with our new understanding of it's context . Note: (The [Shakir] is a reference to the person who translated this version into English.

[Shakir 9:1] (This is a declaration of) immunity by Allah and His Messenger towards those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement. [9:2] So go about in the land for four months and know that you cannot weaken Allah and that Allah will bring disgrace to the unbelievers. [9:3] And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah and His Messenger are free from liability to the idolaters; therefore if you repent, it will be better for you, and if you turn back, then know that you will not weaken Allah; and announce painful punishment to those who disbelieve. [9:4] Except those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement, then they have not failed you in anything and have not backed up any one against you, so fulfil their agreement to the end of their term; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).

[9:5] So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. [9:6] And if one of the idolaters seek protection from you, grant him protection till he hears the word of Allah, then make him attain his place of safety; this is because they are a people who do not know.

[9:7] How can there be an agreement for the idolaters with Allah and with His Messenger; except those with whom you made an agreement at the Sacred Mosque? So as long as they are true to you, be true to them; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).[9:8] How (can it be)! while if they prevail against you, they would not pay regard in your case to ties of relationship, nor those of covenant; they please you with their mouths while their hearts do not consent; and most of them are transgressors. [9:9] They have taken a small price for the communications of Allah, so they turn away from His way; surely evil is it that they do. [9:10] They do not pay regard to ties of relationship nor those of covenant in the case of a believer; and these are they who go beyond the limits. [9:11] But if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, they are your brethren in faith; and We make the communications clear for a people who know. [ 9:12] And if they break their oaths after their agreement and (openly) revile your religion, then fight the leaders of unbelief - surely their oaths are nothing - so that they may desist.

[9:13] What! will you not fight a people who broke their oaths and aimed at the expulsion of the Messenger, and they attacked you first; do you fear them? But Allah is most deserving that you should fear Him, if you are believers. [9:14] Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace, and assist you against them and heal the hearts of a believing people. [9:15] And remove the rage of their hearts; and Allah turns (mercifully) to whom He pleases, and Allah is Knowing, Wise. [9:16] What! do you think that you will be left alone while Allah has not yet known those of you who have struggled hard and have not taken any one as an adherent besides Allah and His Messenger and the believers; and Allah is aware of what you do.

[9:17] The idolaters have no right to visit the mosques of Allah while bearing witness to unbelief against themselves, these it is whose doings are null, and in the fire shall they abide. [9:18] Only he shall visit the mosques of Allah who believes in Allah and the latter day, and keeps up prayer and pays the poor-rate and fears none but Allah; so (as for) these, it may be that they are of the followers of the right course.

[9:19] What! do you make (one who undertakes) the giving of drink to the pilgrims and the guarding of the Sacred Mosque like him who believes in Allah and the latter day and strives hard in Allah's way? They are not equal with Allah; and Allah does not guide the unjust people. [9:20] Those who believed and fled (their homes), and strove hard in Allah's way with their property and their souls, are much higher in rank with Allah; and those are they who are the achievers (of their objects). [9:21] Their Lord gives them good news of mercy from Himself and (His) good pleasure and gardens, wherein lasting blessings shall be theirs; [ 9:22] Abiding therein for ever; surely Allah has a Mighty reward with Him.

[9:23] O you who believe! do not take your fathers and your brothers for guardians if they love unbelief more than belief; and whoever of you takes them for a guardian, these it is that are the unjust. [9:24] Say: If your fathers and your sons and your brethren and your mates and your kinsfolk and property which you have acquired, and the slackness of trade which you fear and dwellings which you like, are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His way, then wait till Allah brings about His command: and Allah does not guide the transgressing people.

[9:25] Certainly Allah helped you in many battlefields and on the day of Hunain, when your great numbers made you vain, but they availed you nothing and the earth became strait to you notwithstanding its spaciousness, then you turned back retreating. [9:26] Then Allah sent down His tranquillity upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and sent down hosts which you did not see, and chastised those who disbelieved, and that is the reward of the unbelievers. [9:27] Then will Allah after this turn (mercifully) to whom He pleases, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful [9:28] O you who believe! the idolaters are nothing but unclean, so they shall not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year; and if you fear poverty then Allah will enrich you out of His grace if He please; surely Allah is Knowing Wise. [ 9:29] Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Messenger have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.

A different opinion

I am speaking from a different view. Of course the Qu'ran is going to promote "peace". Although I have only read excerpts (like the ones above), the Qu'ran and modern day Islamic countries/Sharia Law are very different. I do not want you to simply to take my word - research this yourself. Here I am specifically talking about Sharia Law, aka Muslim Law. Under Sharia Law, women have no rights. Under Sharia, a man can have up to four wives at a time, men are allowed to murder their own children, and r

ape victims have been flogged for "sex outside of marriage".To prove rape, a woman must have four male witnesses. Homosexuality is punishable by death. Over 90% of all "honor killings" are by Muslims.

Not all Muslims are "terrorists" or "against peace".Some are extremely friendly and kind. I am a firm believer in that. You should not judge people just because they are Muslims or Christians. I am simply stating facts and urge you to do research on both sides.

In order to answer this question in terms of modern parlance is made more difficult by the problem that nobody has tried to define the term "religion of peace".

  • Does it mean that everyone who follows the religion is peaceful? In this case Islam is not such a religion whereas Jainism would be. There are numerous non-extremist Muslims who proudly serve in many nations' armed forces, police forces, and other apparatuses where a person is thrown into non-peaceful situations. Jains, Amish, and Quakers (for example) are not in a similar position.
  • Does it mean that Islam promotes peace over violence? In that case Islam probably is a religion of peace, but so are just about all religions aside from death cults and the term becomes meaningless. This is the view taken by celebrated theologian Tariq Ramadan.
  • Does it mean that when Islam becomes the dominant religion in an area, that area sees peace? In this case, the claim is demonstrably false. The Fitna Al-Kubra, for example, was a war that existed entirely within Islam. The Fatimid-Seljuk conflict was entirely between Muslims, many of the conquests of Tamerlane, which were egregiously bloody were of fellow Muslim territories, and the Almohads slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Muslims in peacetime for believing differently than them. (All of these wars occurred before European political ascendance.) Today in many Islamic countries, human rights are actively repressed and religious leaders promote the dehumanization of non-Muslims, which is expressly anti-peace.
  • Does it mean that most Muslims are peaceful people? In this case, yes, Islam is a peaceful religion overall and its adherents are usually very boring people (in the sense that they are not involved in geopolitics) who go to work every weekday and love their children. Again this does not make Muslims different or special from other religious groups since nearly every religion feels this way.
  • Traditional Meaning: Originally, the claim "religion of peace" meant: To he who surrenders to the will of Allah (which in Arabic is the same as the verb to convert to Islam), he will have a religion of peace. Therefore, becoming a Muslim is what allows you to benefit from the Peace that Islam brings. Whether or not this theoretical view that conversion to Islam guarantees a person peace is justified is debatable, but there is no doubt that the Peace does not belong to anyone who prevents the Spread of Islam.

After all this, whether you choose to believe Islam is a "religion of peace" is your prerogative.

Yes, Islam calls for peace and can bring peace to the world.

Islam is an Arabic word that means submission. The Arabic root of the word 'Islam' is 'Selm' that means peace. Accordingly, Islam calls for peace with yourself, peace between God (the Creator) and yourself, peace between yourself and your community, peace among all people of different cultures, different races, different religions, different colors, and different genders.

Some people may have different perception in Islam calling for Jihad (struggle). Jihad means literally to struggle. One may struggle in many different ways: pay the bill, study for a test, raise a family, fight a war, etc. Jihad can be either self Jihad or military jihad.

  • self Jihad (or self struggle) to prevent yourself from disobeying your Creator and committing sins or committing bad acts against yourself, your community, your religion, your family, your neighbours, etc. and
  • military jihad
    • to defend yourself, your family, your country, and your religion against invaders and attackers, and/or
    • to help the helpless if they ask for your support against invaders or attackers.

Military jihad is licit only if you fulfil the following conditions:

  • Fight only in self defense or against oppression.
  • Never Kill Innocent People.
  • Never Injure Prisoners of War.
  • Never Kill Animals .Never Destroy Crops or Infrastructures .
  • Never Mutilate Bodies of Enemies dead or alive.
  • All Prisoners Should be Given Fair Treatment .
  • Women & Children Should be Protected From Harm. Always Bury the Dead With Respect .

If these conditions are met, military jihad is justified.

Muslims are commanded by God to treat people; of all beliefs and cultures; friendly, kindly, and peacefully unless they fight us on our religion or they occupy our lands and drive us away from our homes

In the Quran, Holy book of Islam, God has said (meaning English Translation):

" God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers."(Quran, chapter 60/ verse 8)

Even in time of war, Prophet Muhammad (peace upon him) used, in any military conflict, to prohibit soldiers from killing women, children, old people, or any civilian. He would advise them: {...Do not betray, do not be excessive, do not kill a newborn child.} And he also said: {Whoever has killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found for a span of forty years.}

Also, the Prophet Muhammad (peace upon him) listed murder as the second of the major sins (the first major sin is denying the oneness of God), and he even warned that on the Day of Judgment, {The first cases to be adjudicated between people on the Day of Judgment will be those of bloodshed.}

Quran states that Allah (God) created all people from Adam and Eve and made them in different cultures, races, and faiths to compete and cooperate together for the mankind prosperity and not to fight.

Some others relate terrorism to Islam. Terrorism is a crime against humanity. Terrorism is an act of devil and all religions, including Islam, and holy books, including Quran, are against terrorism and condemn it. However, terrorists from all religions and cultures are present from time to time. However, never terrorists called, through media or politicians, by their religion origin, rather called by their nationalities except if terrorists are Muslims. This confirms that Islamic terrorism is just a new term falsified by historians, media and politicians and propagated to go ahead with their plans of getting control of Muslim countries and to limit the growing number of people converting to Islam.

Islam is a religion that means "peace" and surrender to the only one God. In the Quran, the Holy Book of Islam, God commands believers to bring peace and security to mankind. The Islamic morality is the cure for terrorism, not the source of it.
