However, under the Residence Act of 1790, a new location was created out of land from Maryland and Virginia, which became the District of Columbia, now Washington, DC.

Congress, under the Articles of Confederation, met in Annapolis from November 26, 1783 to June 3, 1784, making it the de facto national capital.

St. Mary's City was the original location for Maryland's colonial government. As the population of Maryland grew, people complained that St. Mary's City was too far away from where most of the population of Maryland lived. In 1694/95, Royal Governor Francis Nicholson chose Anne Arundel Town as the new capital because of it's location on the Chesapeake Bay, and renamed it Annapolis.
