That's an excellent question.
In my opinion, when a neurotypical actor is hired to play someone with an autistic spectrum disorder, they tend to "dummy it up" more than necessary. Autistics aren't retarded by any stretch of the imagination. Claire Danes tried to do a good job, but the bottom line is that she over-dramatized Temple Grandin, from her voice to her facial expressions.
Watch any movie with a normal actor playing a developmentally disabled person, and you get the same thing. The closest portrayal I've ever seen that came across as relatively "real" was Mozart & the Whale. Worth seeing if you haven't seen it!
The "dummy up" factor is the primary reason my son (Aspie's) won't watch any of these kinds of movies. It's a shame, too, because many of them are otherwise inspirational and have messages worthwhile for autistic kids and adults. But who wants to watch a portrayal that makes you feel like velcro?
