Tetanus is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetini which is a Gram positive, spore forming, obligate anaerobe. C.tetini produces a toxin called tetano spasm in it is this peptide which causes the symptoms of the disease.

If there is a wound or deep cut, the toxins produced by this bacteria permeates into the wound, and gradually, there is a contraction of the fibres of the skeletal muscles.
