Is Thomas a Kempis a Saint?

Answer

As far as I can tell, he was not canonized. The story I have heard, which is also mentioned on snopes.com (<span><span>http://www.snopes.com/horrors/gruesome/buried.asp) is that when the corpse was disinterred for the recognitio, it was seen that he had been buried alive. In such cases, the possibility of having despaired is considered to be so great, that this practical derails the canonization process, even if there is no other evidence of despair. In Thomas' case, there were scratch marks on the inside of the coffin as well.

I have seen at least one reference to his having been beatified, but although he was a native of the diocese of Cologne, he is not found on the diocesan calendar, so I have at least some doubt that this is the case.
