The planetVulcan was theorised to exist between the Sun and Mercury, due to variations in Mercury's orbit that couldn't be explained. The French mathematician Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier hypothesized that these were the result of another planet.

He was later proved wrong by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which explained the orbit of Mercury.

The planet lives on in Star Trek, the home of Spock.
