Age of Empires Expansion will operate under Vista and function under Multiplayer mode with XP computers. There is an issue between Vista and XP computers due to a more sophisticated UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) on Vista. By stopping the UPnP (not Plug & Play) service and the SSDP Discovery service (Simple Service Discovery Protocol) both the XP and Vista computers will interact with Age of Empires.
One can detect the problem that this resolves by using a network analyzer (such as Wireshark http://www.wireshark.org/download.html) to capture network traffic. The Vista computer will transmit packets to the WAN IP Address on the Router and the router in turn will forward them to the XP computer. The XP computer on the other hand will transmit packets directly to the Vista Computer causing the Vista computer to issue a TCP Reset Packet killing the connection. Once the UPnP & SSDP services are stopped, the packets will flow directly between the two computers.
Stopping these two services, however, may interfere with other programs ability to communicate through a firewall. So the service may need to be stopped for AOE play and then restarted afterward.
No you can only play AOE3 on Vista
