A release is a good idea in all situations if you can get it. It is not neccessary if the photo is used for journalistic purposes. If it is used for commercial purposes such as in advertising then you'd better have a release.

This all assumes that the person or persons in the photo are easily recognizable. If only their mother would know it's them then foget the need for a release.

If the photo is in some way embarassing to the subject (can you see the naughty bits?) then you'd better get a release!!
