Rear wheel drive...connects the transmission to the rear end. Transfers power from the motor to the rear axle. Front wheel drive... connects the transmission to each front axle. Usually refered to as CV or drive axle. Same purpose. The drive shaft contains the rod that takes energy from the engine and transmits it to the drive wheels of a car.

The car has only one transaxle, AKA transmission, then no, you cannot remove the tranny without removing the tranny. If you mean without removing CV Axle or drive axle or Axle shaft or CV shaft (same thing) then the answer is still no. You cannot remove the transaxle without removing the drive axle/CV shaft.

To check the rear axle ratio on your Suburban, you need to safely jack up the vehicle to get access to the the rear axle. Then there should be a metal tag on one of the bolts on the rear axle cover indicating the axle ratio. The ratio varies with different options and load capacities, so it's not the same for all Suburban's.
I had the same deal a month ago. It was RR.Pinion Joint, part # 41315-HN2-000 You take the rearend off and the shaft that connects the RR and motor is where it is. I hope this helps you.
They all have to be the same size. They can be different brands but even then make sure the tires on the front axle are the same brand an the tires on the rear axle are the same brand. Do not mix brands on the same axle.

It is ok as long as you have the same size on each axle. In other words you must have the exact same size tire on the front axle or the rear axle. Never mix sizes on an axle.
