Overall a Cartridge filter seems like a good choice for several reasons: 1. They are much smaller 2. They tend to pick up finer dirt 3. They are manually cleaned, so no pool water is used (sand filters are backwashed. This uses lots of pool water) However the disadvantages are: 1. For them to work properly again, they must be let dry after cleaning. 2. The Western Australian Health Department says that pool water should be completely replaced every two years. By backwashing a sand filter, you are always replacing the water. I live in Florida and I have a pool business myself, a cartridge filter is better than a sand filter. If a sand filter breaks it is more expensive to repair than a cartridge filter because 9 times out of 10 the top of the sand filter where the pressure guage is will leak and that means replacing that whole part or the whole sand filter. Most cartridge filters are 2 pieces, a top and bottom half with an rubber O ring in the middle. Most of the time you can buy the top half or bottom half separately saving you money on repair cost, and what usually happens is that the O ring is damaged due to the chlorine in the filter and or the weather. Cartridge has much finer filtering ability and doesn't require backwashing, which drains water from the pool. But it does require period cartridge replacement. Sand is much cheaper and less likely to become plugged with dead algae. The media (sand) only needs to be replace roughly every 10 years. For most people sand is the best all around choice.

Cartridge filters filter water more finely than sand filters and waste less water when cleaning them because they get cleaned not back washed. DE filters are even finer but require backwashing. Sand filters are the easiest to use but require back-wash which wastes some water .

Personally I would go with the sand filter because the difference as opposed to the convenience is not big enough.

Why sand filter is batter than cartridge filter?

Less maintainance with sand you just backwash, and change sand every four years. Cartridge filters clog and have to be taken out and cleaned often. Use sand it is hands down a better system.

What what size sand filter do you need for 23000 gallon pool with 1 hp pump?

I think you should go for a cartridge filter (Pentair 320 sq ft - we can supply for $600 incl frt). Cartridge filters are much better than they used to be, and are far, far more coinvenient than sand. Suitable sand filter would be approx 100 sq ft (and same cost as 320 sq ft cartridge).

When you vacuum-backwash-rinse why do dirt particles come out of the water returns?

If dirt returns to the pool while you are vacuuming, it means there is a hole or broken item in the filter. If filter is a cartridge filter the could be a hole in the cartridge. DE filter, hole in filter fabric or broken plastic manifold. Sand filter - broken plastic fitting maybe.

What is better sand filters or cartridge swimming pool filters?

Thats kind of a tough question to ask, do not know how large of a pool you have, sand filters are excellent change the sand if you feel you are backwashing to much. DEA are good however they should be taken apart and soaked they will cake up and the ropes will become blocked after a time you can take the filter apart then soak the ropes in muratic acid at the end of the season, To me cartridge filters require more attention you have to much exposed area in a pool to much dirt, rain brings a lot of dirt with it, cartridges are my least favorite. It all depends on your needs on which filter to purchase. If you want low maintenance, go for a sand filter . Not afraid of a little work now and then, then cartridge is the way to go. If you need to best and sparkliest pool around and money is of no concern, then go with a DE filter. Any of these will work find, it's all about what you're looking for. Become educated in the variety of filters on the market and choose wisely. It's your money. I do prefer cartridge filters because they put less of a strain on the motor and are fairly easy to maintain.
