Intrinsically safe means a device is safe to use in hazardous areas that may contain fuel in the atmosphere, such as flammable gasses or vapors, or combustible dust.
An intrinsically safe device is therefore incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to ignite the fuel and cause fire or explosion.
So technically waterproof does not necessarily mean it is intrinsically safe. always be sure to read the specification of a device before purchasing to save you time in the long run..

A waterproof camera is like a submarine. The manufacturers do all they can to make sure it can sustain water pressure at certain specified depth. But if there's any problem with the battery/memory doors, the camera will be ruined instantly.
Because of this, you should always check the depth rating of a waterproof camera and make sure you never go beyond the specified limit.
There have been one occasion where an Olympus mju 720SW was found to be working even after 1 year submerged in bottom of the ocean.

A camera enclosure or camera housing makes a once non-waterproof camera into a waterproof camera. A camera enclosure allows one to use their camera underwater and in the rain.
A waterproof camera helps keep cameras safe from harsh weather elements as well as provide a way to take underwater pictures. The cameras are perfect for use when travelling to the beach or even to a pool. Taking photos in the rain with a traditional camera will destroy both the camera and the film. A waterproof camera will still take excellent pictures that become treasured memories without risk.
Yes. You may take photos and videos underwater with a waterproof camera. But make sure you do not use the camera beyond the specified underwater ratings. Fuji makes several waterproof cameras. Models include the Fujifilm XP-10 Waterproof Digital Camera and the Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP. Waterproof digital cameras create underwater photos that are vibrant and clear. Many are also heat and freeze-proof for use in extreme temperatures.

Kodak recommends using their waterproof single-use camera, which is good down to 50 feet of water. They believe this is the best way to get underwater shots without accidentally ruining a much more expensive camera model.
Nice question...:) Yes..., BUT, underwater cameras are essentially designed for use underwater, so it also has bulky protective casings which keeps the camera watertight and protects it from getting soaked. So a simple photo shoot would involve you carrying and using bulky large cameras. Yes, it can be used without difficulty. If the waterproof housing is plastic, however, you may lose some focus quality. If the lens iris is adjustable, use a high number to close the lens and increase the quality to make up for it.
The purpose of underwater camera housing is to allow one to use a camera underwater. With good underwater camera housing one can take photos underwater when snorkelling, diving or just for general interest.

Most of the high-end waterproof digital cameras are extremely expensive and are only useful for taking pictures underwater, meaning they aren't very useful for any other application such as normal picture taking. The cheaper waterproof digital cameras are more in-line with regular digital camera costs but do not produce very clear images. There are waterproof enclosures for almost all normal cameras which allow them to be used underwater and this has two benefits. The first is that you can use an existing camera you already own allowing for a wider range of uses, and the second is that the waterproof enclosures are much cheaper than an entirely new camera. As a SCUBA diver I have seen waterproof digital cameras fail several times from seals which had a slight leak and I personally use an enclosure for my camera for both reliability and even if there is a small leak, they are designed to allow water to pool in the bottom preventing it from damaging the camera.
