Is air an element mixture or a compound? |
Answer
Air is primarily made up of nitrogen (78.09%) and oxygen (20.95%). The remaining 1% is made up of argon (0.93%), carbon dioxide (0.03%) and other trace gases (0.003%). Water vapor (water in its gaseous state) is also present in air in varying amounts.
An element cannot be divided into any simpler substance, i.e. all atoms are identical, so air is NOT an element. A mixture is a combination of two or more elements, so air IS a mixture. A compound is a special type of mixture with definite proportions of elements that cannot be separated by physical means, therefore air is NOT a compound.
