Generally, there are two types of 'alcohol'. The kind that would make a person intoxicated if swallowed, is forbidden to use at all - even just on the skin. The kind that does not intoxicate, is permissible to use for various purposes (like disinfection and cleaning or in cologne and perfume).

but Women are not allowed to use perfume on themselves

About the ruling on women wearing perfume, I'd like to comment on it. From what I've heard, women are generally allowed to wear perfume at home(not around non-mahram men) or around other women. Please double check what I'm saying with an Islamic scholar.

.

If you wear it, it is OK I've read in books it is still OK to have it on in Salaah (Namaaz). Some people say it damages the world and us, but it doesn't matter as long as you don't have more than 25%of a 150ml bottle on.

Usually I would say it's haram but since I don't know what the use of this type of alcohol is I'll just say stay away from anything that has the word alcohol in it.

Answer II

Persons who are ignorant of organic chemistry don't understand chemical nature of alcohol .Remember wine contains ethyl alcohol , its chemical name is Ethnol .It is only type of alcohol that is haram , All other types of alcohol eg. methyl alcohol , propyl alcohol , butyl alcohol , etc are non drinkable chemicals used for various purposes and are not haram .
