Pure Ammonium Alum is a salt, not a metal. It's prefered use is for deodorants and anti-perspirants instead of Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly as it's not a metal, and does not cause as many health risks as I've seen as apposed to the Aluminum. Commercially made "Playdoh" can be substituted with home made play dough. One needs to be careful to use a recipe that will not mold or spoil.
