American Staffordshire Terriers are often referred to as "pits" or Pit Bulls but are NOT the same breed.

The term Pit Bull is a gerneric term for dogs that were raised for fighting. It should not be used to refer to any specific breed of dog.

"Courageous and strong, the American Staffordshire Terrier (Am Staff)'s athletic build and intelligence make him ideally suited to many dog sports such as obedience, agility, tracking and conformation. He is often identified by his stocky body and strong, powerful head. The breed's short coat can be any color, and either solid colored, parti-colored or patched.

A Look Back

Until the early 19th century, the Bulldog used for bullbaiting in England was more active and longer-legged than the breed as we know it today. It is thought that the cross of this older Bulldog and a game terrier breed created the Staffordshire Terrier. Originally called the Bull-and-Terrier Dog, Half and Half or Pit Dog, it became known as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in England. When accepted for AKC registration in 1936, the name changed to American Staffordshire Terrier to reflect the heavier American type and to distinguish them as separate breeds.

Right Breed for You?

The Am Staff is a people-oriented dog that thrives when he is made part of the family and given a job to do. Although friendly, this breed is loyal to his family and will protect them from any threat. His short coat is low-maintenance, but regular exercise and training is necessary.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are NEVER to be confused with AST or APBT.

They're way to small, laid back and playful. They've got short, blocky heads, and are very muscular, but a bit more bull-doggy then APBT/AST.

The AST and APBT are from the same lines, but have been bred apart enough to have significant difference.

APBT are sleek, muscular (but it is not obvious from a far), light and very agile. They're generally on the skinny side, with out the more obvious bulk of the AST. They are not supposed to be over 65lbs, and are taller then AST. the APBT has more 'tuck' in its abdomen, if it is well kept, and gives you a general idea of intelligence and speed.

AST are larger overall, with more block-heads, more muscularly defined, and thicker. But they are NOT ''American Bullies''. They are very correct creatures, that are simply a bit thicker, more laid back and with less drive then a APBT.

Most 'APBT' you see now are not truly purebred, nor of very good lines.

check out: StoryTime Kennel for AST examples (great examples) and Caragan kennels & WorkingPitBull for APBT (great examples).

Additional:

American PitBull Terrier is a breed that is only recognized by the UKC, and the UKC does not recognize the American Staffordshire Terrier. The reverse is true of the AKC. Because of this, many people believe that the APBT/AST are the same breed, but called different names.

The American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are recognized as separate breeds throughout most of the World. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an English breed, standing at between 14 and 16 inches tall at the shoulder. The American Staffordshire Terrier was bred using the English Staffordshire's in America and has greater size. American Staffordshire's stand at between 17 and 19 inches tall at the shoulder. The main difference between these two breeds is their size, but American Staffordshire Terriers are unfortunately prohibited in many countries, including England.

What is the species of a pitbull?

The pit bull comprises several breeds, including the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. They are all of the species Canis lupus familiaris.

What Are The Pit bull Breeds?

Pit bulls often refer to breeds of dogs in the Mastiff group of dogs, which are generally larger dogs that are often (historically) used for dog fighting. Other breeds of dogs which are in the same category are the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Staffordshire Terrier. I do know that Pit Bulls derive from cross-breeding's of Mastiffs and American Staffordshire Terriers (look at a pic of Staffordshires and Pit Bulls, they look almost the same!!) and maybe other breeds. Good answer! But, the term "pit bull" refers more to terriers. "Pit Bulls" included the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Terrier. The most common reference to the term "pit bull" refers to the American Pit Bull Terrier, which does not stem from the Mastiff family. The American Pit Bull Terrier more closely stems from a mix of Staffordshire Terrier and Old English Bulldog (not to be confused with American Bulldog.) The American Bulldog is more closely related to the Mastiff family, not the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, or the Staffordshire Terrier.

Name all breeds of the pitbull?

The Pit Bull itself is only one breed, but there are two other breeds that are very similar. These are the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The Pit Bull is not an officially recognised breed and so is not bred to a standard. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a smaller recognised version of the Pit Bull, and the American Staffordshire Terrier is a recognised version of the Pit Bull.

Is a bull terrier bigger than a staffie?

Firstly, the Pit Bull is not actually a breed, but the term is used to refer to breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and sometimes the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Assuming by ''Pit Bull'' you mean the American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier, the difference is that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a few inches shorter, weighs less and was first bred in England. ''Pit Bull'' type dogs are unfortunately illegal in many countries, such as the UK, with the exception of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier; which is still legal.

Does the breading of the staff have anything to do with a pit bull?

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was first bred in Staffordshire, England, using Bulldog's (not today's ones) and local Terrier's. The American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier were bred using English Staffordshire's by increasing their size and weight. Therefore, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was the main breed used in the development of the Pit Bull - not the other way around.
