I think that an Ipod Nano is an appropriate gift. It's not too expensive, and it's entertaining for the child to have one. Even just having them listen to it in the car, on the way somewhere, could be a lifesaver for you because they are entertained and occupied. It's not to pricey of a gift for a child that's 9 years old.
