Alphabet Codes For Remembering Odd Names Yielding Meanings

This may in fact be a clever way to remember the spelling of "acronym", but sadly, it's not how the word came to be. "Acronym" is a word constructed, in a conventional manner, from Greek roots: akros "tip" (also occurs in "acrostic") and -onym"name" (also occurs in "homonym").

An acronym uses the first letter or letters from the words in a phrase or name to form an abbreviated term. Examples are USA, UK, FDR, JFK, FBI, CIA, MIT, IBM, AARP, CPU, DVD, and LOL. Some acronyms have multiple meanings.

Acronyms also include the construction of new words from the initial letters of other words e.g. scuba (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) and laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) and radar(Radio Detection and Ranging). This form is distinct from an abbreviation as it must be pronounced as a word not a series of letters.
