It is fairly common. But this does depend on the amount of bleeding you're talking about. Slight spotting is normal. Heavy bleeding is not. If you have any doubts, go to an ER and get examined.

Some women experience a small amount of spotting or bleeding very early in pregnancy, about a week to 14 days after fertilization. Known as implantation bleeding, it happens when the fertilized egg first attaches to the lining of the uterus. This type of bleeding is usually a bit earlier, spottier and lighter in color than a usual period or a brownish discharge and doesn't last long.

Believe it or not, you are not the first, nor will you be the last, to experience bleeding during pregnancy. In fact, I'm just happy to hear you call it vaginal bleeding instead of your period, as so many women confuse.

Generally speaking, bleeding is normal during the first trimester. There are some constraints to this however. These range from the flow to the appearance, from frequency to other concurrent symptoms.

If you're experiencing light spotting periodically throughout the days or weeks early on, chances are it is implantation bleeding. If it sometimes seems light, sometimes seems like you are menstruating, this is referred to as early pregnancy bleeding and is caused by hormonal changes in the body as a result of the implantation and pregnancy. If it appears that it you are loosing very small amounts of tissue and/or heavy flow, this is called decidual bleeding. If you were on the pill when you got pregnant, and stopped taking it because you got pregnant, this is another cause for some bleeding. All of these things are considered "normal," "common," and "non-emergency."

However, there are some emergency causes of bleeding. If you are experiencing bleeding that begins light then becomes very heavy with also strong lower abdominal pain that comes and goes, this is a sign of miscarriage. If you have brown spotting, continuous or not, with any kind of abdominal and/or shoulder pain, this is a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. Molar pregnancies have a continuous brownish discharge. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms (any pain is a huge hint here) you must called your doctor immediately for instruction. If he's not in, head to your nearest ER right away.

The main thing is to make sure you inform your OB/GYN of any and all bleeding issues, unless he tells you otherwise. Keep a journal and write down everything you can think of: flow (light, heavy, or in between), color, any odors, any sign of tissue (small or large) especially tissue fragments that are solid (if there are, try to save them in a jar to be evaluated by your doctor), whether it is intermittent or continuous, when it started and ended, and any other concurrent symptoms, such as pain, headaches, nausea, vomiting, weakness, fever, etc. Give all of this information to your doctor at your next visit, unless it constitutes an emergency, in which case you must head to the ER. Your doctor will want to evaluate all of these and determine the cause (if it's even possible, as it is often difficult), and instruct you in what you need to do.

The related question linked below contains a lot of information in regards to the different cases of vaginal bleeding.

I don't know what you are asking exactly, but no bleeding while you are pregnant isn't normal. You need to go see a doctor right away. It could be nothing, but it could also be something very serious. It's never normal to bleed while pregnant, go see a doctor.

There is something called decidual bleeding. It may seem like a normal period, but is not. It can occur up to 12 weeks during pregnancy. It may sometimes mean m/c, you should ask your doc though. When in doubt ask your doc... no matter what. There is no such thing as too many questions.

Can I just add that no bleeding during any time in pregnancy should be considered normal while the bleeding may be nothing serious you really need to get to your doctor or clinic asap there may be a problem that can be fixed and everything may be fine but I'm sure you would like to know one way or the other !

I am 6 weeks pregnant and i have some spotting. It worried me at first so i went to the doctor he told me that everything was fine and that some women have some spotting during early pregnancy. Some women even have a period throughout their entire pregnancy. I wouldn't worry too much because worrying could put more unwanted stress on your body.

Absolutely not. If you have had a positive test and you are bleeding heavily you may be miscarrying, if you have not had a positive test it may just be a period.

Good Luck

No, it's not normal. I'd say something is up, although that doesn't mean the baby is always in danger.

Is it normal to have bleeding with lower back pain like period pain very early in pregnancy?

This isn't normal but it is reasonably common. Many women experience bleeding in the early part of pregnancy. Often it will settle and the pregnancy proceeds as normal. However, the cramps are not a particularly great sign. The combination can mean you will or are having a miscarriage. See your doctor so they can perform further tests to see if this actually is the case.
