While China is definitely less communist than during the time of Chairman Mao, it still has some remnants of a communist system remaining. The state sponsored capitalism puts them in a nebulous zone where they are neither democratic nor free.

∙ 10y agoNot at all. China was never communist by strict definition from the start (when chair Mao Zedong declared China communist in 1949, China was more of a mix of socialism, Confucianism, and other political/social systems Mao Zedong adopted).
China could not be considered communist or socialist by any definition since the 1970s, when Chairman Deng Xiaoping instituted free trade reforms (which violates key tenets of communism).

∙ 12y agoRussia was a communist state until 1991when the U.S.S.R disintegrated. Russia is now officially a capitalist state though there are a considerable number of people who support communism. The transition to capitalism did not go smoothly in Russia, thanks largely to cronyism at the leadership level, and an extremely active mafia. It is probably best to think of Russia as a Dictatorship run by officials of the former KGB and the various mafia vors (think "Godfathers") throughout the land.
China is technically still a communist state. It is run by the Communist Party, but their policies are now distinctly trending towards capitalism. During the early-1980's, the Chinese established a number of Special Economic Zones on the coasts where limited capitalism was permitted. It has since expanded these zones dramatically, and the national trend has been towards more capitalism.
