This is the question i had to ask myself recently, when i bought a new PC.

I went for core 2 duo myself. Why? because i investigated on it and got just one answer from everywhere: core 2 duo is much more efficient.. its like newer is better... but we are here comparing CPU(s) with diffrent speeds. For me speeds 3.0ghz and 2.33ghz don't make much of a diffence.

So i'd say it depends on individual, ask yourself .. is 3.0ghz really your minimum requirement?? if no, go with core 2 duo, because its better.

The Core 2 Duo processors are very fast, a 2.66GHz C2D is faster than a 3.0GHz dual core.

The clock rate of processors doesn't mean much these days, unless you're comparing clock rates within the same family of processors.

Also note that C2D processors are 64bit capable too.

Other way around. The Core 2 Duo has higher performance (at the same nominal clock speed) than the Dual-Core.

I personally think that this was about the last set of Intel processors where it was possible to make any guesses based solely on the name which processors were "better". After this, Intel just said "Sod it, we'll just give them names at random, and good luck to any poor buggers who want to try to figure out if an i3 3789 is better or worse than an i7 2973, or where an i5 9278 fits in."

This trend arguably started with the Celeron. I mean, an 80486 was obviously "100 better" than an 80386, which was better than an 80286, and so on, and it wasn't too hard to figure out that the Pentium was newer and better. Then there was the Pentium II, so far, so good, we've got a new little theme going on ... and just as people were congratulating themselves for sussing out the new naming system, boom, Celeron. Newer but not clearly better than a PII. And it's only gotten worse since.

Yes. The Intel Core 2 Duo and the Intel Pentium Dual-Core share the same architecture. Only when you have the same architecture is the clock speed a good indicator of performance.

It depends on what you use it for. 3.2 Pentiums are good for medium range gaming. 2.4 Dual cores with are good for multi tasking and more high end games.

Look, It depends what you use it for, but generally with these more basic processors, the more GHZ the better. The Pentium 4 is PROBABLY better.
