Eating gold or silver in it's original state is harmful to the body. The only form of these metals that is a safe, food grade state are the types processed specifically for consumption, commonly used by cake decorators.

Cake decorators use commercially manufactured gold/silver leaves and gold/silver dust in cake decorating, which is completely safe for human consumption. These are used sparingly though, as they are quite expensive.

Gold is an inert metal. Eating or drinking gold leaf will not cause you any problems as it is too soft to do any damage. If you drink liquid gold, it is very hot and will burn you badly and probably kill you.
