Ebenezer means "Stone of Help." It was the name of the memorial stone set up by Samuel to commemorate God's assistance to Israel in their great battle against the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:7-12) at Aphek. On this very battle-field, 2 decades earlier, the Philistines "slew of the army in the field about four thousand men" (1 Samuel 4:1,2). In this emergency the Israelites fetched the ark out of Shiloh and carried it into their camp. The Philistines a second time immediately attacked them, and smote them with a very great slaughter, "for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. And the ark of God was taken" (1 Samuel 4:10). And now in the same place the Philistines are vanquished, and the memorial stone is erected by Samuel. The spot where the stone was erected was somewhere "between Mizpeh and Shen."
Actually Ebenezer was a site where the Isrealites defeated the Philistines.
It is also a stone that was erected to honor the victories.

I cite the following from Wikipedia:
Eben-Ezer (Hebrew: אבן העזר, Even Ha'Ezer, lit. stone of help), is the name of a location that is mentioned by the Books of Samuel as the scene of battles between the Israelites and Philistines. It is specified as having been less than a day's journey by foot from Shiloh, near Aphek, in the neighbourhood of Mizpah, near the western entrance of the pass of Beth-horon. However, its location has not been identified in modern times with much certainty, with some identifying it with Beit Iksa, and others with Dayr Aban.
