Once damage to the lungs is done it is permanent and irreversible. However, stopping the cause of the emphysema, such as smoking, can lessen further damage and decrease the pace of deterioration (worsening). Also, some of the wheezing, cough and shortness of breath is due to other factors than lung tissue destruction so stopping the inciting factor can lead to an improvement of the symptoms.
