Firstly fencing isn't 'played', it's, well, fenced. It's more a verb in it's own right!

Fencing is done with two opponents facing one another on a 'piste' or 'strip', hooked up to a box by electrical wire. The box will light and make a sound when a hit is touched. This is individual competition. In Team competition, there are 3 members often with one reserve per team and they all fence each other to five hits once. This amounts to a 'first to 45' system.
