Parsis throughout India use their profession as surnames, a practice prevalent from ancient times in India. The word Ghantiwala (dealer of chronographs) got shortened to Ghanti and then to Ghandi and later to Gandhi. The family understandably dealt in watches and clocks in their early days. Mahatma Gandhi is said to be responsible for changing his surname at the time of his marriage to Indira in 1942. Strangely nobody has so far checked the records at London School of Economics where he studied briefly. Not even his school or college records were verified by historians in India.
