No, Gizmo is not real. The word Mogwai is Cantonese. It means "Ghost" or "devil". There is no living creature called a Mogwai, which is a pity really because Gizmo is an adorable little character!
The word "Gremlin" was first used in the 1920s to refer to low-ranking Royal Air Force officers. The common misconception is that the term originated during the second world war as a term used by aviators to explain away faults in aircraft systems. This is innacurate. This idea was spawned by certain works of fiction written by Roald Dahl in the 1940s and purchased by Walt Disney. The word did, however end up synonymous with faulty machinary, especially aircraft.
The origin of the word "Gremlin" is harder to pin down. Some believe it comes from Gaelic and bears reference to what might be called Leprechauns. Others think it stems from the Old English "Gremian", meaning "to vex". There are many other theories as to the words origin, but unfortunately none are proven.
