The definition of "God" varies from religion to religion, and person to person. For instance, to me "God" is just the earth. But to others, god may be a human, or a "spirit". Find out what you believe, and try to base it on facts.

From my research I am of the opinion that God was a creation of man. I believe that God came from the imagination of the inquisitive minds of leaders who were searching for answers to the challenging questions of their subjects.
God therefore was created in the image and likeness of the political/religious leaders.

Another viewpoint: The Bible says that God is NOT a man (Numbers 23:19), but a spirit (John 4:24) and resides in Heavens (Psalms 115:16)(Isaiah 66:1)
