Is there such thing as good luck?

Although there are a few spells used to bring good luck it is more common to make and/or carry a talisman or amulet for the purpose.

Amulets are usually items such as jewelery or something already made that have been magically charged to bring a desired effect in this case, good luck. A lucky penny, a rabbits foot or a piece of jade.

A talisman is something constructed, carved, painted etc, using specific symbols on certain materials and magically charged using a "spell." For example a round dick of wood, carved or painted with an Egyptian scarab is very lucky.

I suspect there may not be one answer for all Buddhists but I was taught that cause and effect is the unfailing universal law - action and reaction - this seems to be a reliable idea from a spiritual and scientific point of view. In this sense there is no luck just the playing out of cause and effect. The problem is understanding the play of cause and effect rather than taking we we like or don't like as important.

A simple example; you win the lottery, become wealthy, waste your life and money on consumer durables and become essentially unhappy - good luck? You lose the lottery get a job, have a rewarding career and make a wonderful life for you and your family - bad luck?

yes, it's like flipping a coin... it can go either way, but it's your luck that determines head or tail... having a good luck charm helps.

no bad luck does not exist just because black cats cross you does not mean that its bad luck.
