No. Hydroxyzine Pamoate, better known as Vistaril is an antihistamine originally used for pruritus (itching) however Zyrtec (cetirizine), an active metabolite of hydroxyzine and Xyzal (levocetirizine), a slightly altered version of cetirizine are primarily used for pruritus.
Some low quality evidence suggests that Vistaril may be useful in treating anxiety. It is often used in patients with a history of substance abuse or those with a significant risk of developing substance abuse. However it is becoming more commonly used in all patients due to the fact it is not a drug of abuse where as benzodiazepines do have an abuse potential.
Benzodiazepines, with a few exceptions, are easily identified by their name which typically ends with "pam" or "am" examples include
alprazolam, bromazepam,, clonazepam, diazepam, estazolam, flunitrazepam, flurazepam, lorazepam, midazolam, nitrazepam, oxazepam, quazepam, temazepam, and triazolam.
Notable exceptions include chlordiazepoxide and clorazepate.
