When setting the table for a meal in which soup is the first course, the soup bowls are placed on top of the dinner plate. (Or on top of the salad plate, which is already on top of the dinner plate if salad is to follow the soup.)

The answer will depend on the shape and dimensions of the bowls and the box. A circular object, placed in a rectangular container will, inevitably, resulted in wasted space. There will also be wasted space because of the curvature of the bowls. In short, there is not enough information to give a sensible answer.
You didn't say what the bowls were made of, but you could try either heating or cooling the bowls. You could also try blowing cornstarch down between them to lubricate them, or soaking them in soapy water.
Roman bowls were made of ceramic, glass or metal. The metal bowls could sometimes be either gold or silver and some were decorated elaborately while others were plain and utilitarian.
You can't place them down. You can only drink out of bowls, throw out bowls,craft bowls, place bowls in and out of item frames and put bowls in and out of chests. You might be thinking of a pot.
