Yes it is. He's using money to control you. If you don't squander the money and take care what you buy, then there is no reason both of you shouldn't be handling the money. If you're smart any money you may get for yourself you should put in an interest bearing account at the highest premium you can get. All you have to do is talk to anyone in any bank and they'll help you choose the right plan. I have some of my money stashed away (in my Will that money of course will be released to my husband should I die before him); I learned long ago in order to feel independent it's wise to have a little nest egg of your own. If you should split-up remind him that 1/2 of what he owns you own! That goes right down to pensions (personal or armed forces.) He may think he has control of the situation but the law says otherwise. If you've proved you can't handle credit cards and maxed them out then I don't blame him for controlling the money, but if you are good at controlling the money in your household then nip this behavior in the bud or tell him to hit the bricks! Good luck Marcy

No, not if you are a minor or the money is "In Trust". They are probably withholding some money because they find you irresponsible or, if home you aren't doing your chores. If you are old enough to go to work then go out make your own money. If your parents are spending all your money then you have something to worry about and you'll need legal counsel for that. I have a feeling you'll just blow the bucks. The only money one truly has a right to is that which he/she has earned. If your parents are not giving you that money, there may be a problem. If there are shifting expectations where you meet the goals and then there are more set up, then it might be considered abuse. However, then there are many positive reasons why they may be withholding it, besides just not wanting to give it to you. Many trusts are set up with a "spendthrift clause," where the person who bequeathed the money empowered the trustees to manage the money. That means you have to have legitimate, specific reasons for obtaining a sum of money before they can give it to you. So, generally, you'll need to show that you are maintaining sensible spending habits so that requests can be respected. If you are seen as productive--going to school with good grades, working and living a drug/substance free life, then you will be more likely to convince them to free up the money. In addition, if they do honor your request, definitely follow through with what you said you would do with the money.
