It depends on what you believe. With most people seeking good luck or maintaining it, they just don't want to risk it. Personally, I take my Christmas tree down on New Year's Day.
Some people just like to look of the tree in all it's splendor of colors and hate to bring it down.
If, for some reason you will be away, and your tree is extremely dry and a fire risk, just take it down. It really doesn't make much difference.
