Is it better to order Valentine's Day flowers online or locally?

[Edit]
There are benefits to both methods. If you're looking for a high-quality arrangement that is more likely to arrive when its supposed to, you should go to a local florist. If you're in a hurry and sending flowers to a recipient who lives in an area unfamiliar to you, a large florist network may be the answer. A good way to find the best floral in an unfamiliar town is to phone the best hotel and ask the concierge who they use for their flowers. Be careful finding local florists online. Many large flower warehouses will pose as a local florist online and actually charge you a commission to send your order to the local florist.

When you order flowers online, you don't need to search for a local florist in your recipient's town (if they live elsewhere). The transaction can be conducted quickly with just a few clicks. You can quickly browse arrangement by flower type, or also by suggestions of arrangements appropriate to the occasion (romantic, congratulations, new baby, get well, etc...).

Although online florists are convenient, there are drawbacks. Visiting your florist in person adds a personal touch to your transaction, as well as probably getting you a better bunch of flowers. Your online floral order will be filled by a local florist. That florist will be paid less for filling your online order by the network than they would be if you ordered the arrangement yourself either over the phone or in person. To make up for their increased expense, they will not use their best flowers, and they might not use as many of them either.

Finally, online florist networks are not aware of the fulfilling florist's schedule and could send your order to a florist that is already running behind schedule. If you want your flowers to arrive on time (particularly at the holidays), go to the local florist.

So again, it depends how important these flowers will be. For occassions like a wedding or funeral (where they can't be late) I would go with a florist. Big holidays like Valentines day will probably leave your order arriving late if you order online - if this is not a big deal, click away. If your significant other will leave you over the late delivery, go to the florist. Sending flowers to your mom in Florida when you're in New York may be a good one to use the online floral network's site for.
