Most school districts have rules that must be followed if you want to enter a child's classroom during school hours, for example: you almost always have to check in with the main office before going to the classroom. If you enter the classroom without following the correct policies and procedures, then you will probably find yourself running afoul of the law. Making a mistake usually won't be prosecuted, but it could be. There are circumstances where you will be denied access to the classroom during school hours - for example when they are taking a test. You are expected to respect those rules. Also, realize that even when it is legal, it may not be a good thing to do. It can disrupt the class and it can put the teacher on edge. Teachers already catch way too much grief from the outside from people blaming them for their parenting failures, so it tends to make them nervous when a parent shows up unannounced - and maybe even when they ARE expected. Be considerate.

Most school systems have security measures in place that would make it impossible for a parent to enter a school unimpeded and then walk into a classroom. Think about that. If security procedures are that lax then the parents should be complaining. If a parent could do that then anyone could. In many jurisdictions you would find a locked entrance and would need to ring to be allowed in the building and then you would be required to go to the office and sign in. The school administration would not be likely to allow you to then walk into a classroom unannounced. You would need to make arrangements with the principal in advance if you wish to observe or visit the classroom. The school system will have its own policies regarding parental visits.
