Is it normal to have blood in your bowel after a heart attack?

Supervised by Itamar Medical

Answer

If you have had surgery for your heart problems it is usually normal for a little blood to be in your bowel movements (body getting rid of the excess blood caused by the operation, but it's usually dark in color ... old blood.)

If you had a heart attack and have not had surgery you may well have strained yourself quite badly during the heart attack and could even have hemroids in the rectal area from the straining. This is only a "maybe" because I'm not a doctor. It is best to see your doctor immediately as this the heart is nothing to fool around with. It's important and certainly not a waste of your doctor's time to tell him/her of any different changes in your body. In most cases it's explainable and nothing to worry about.

Please see your doctor and let him/her know because it will put your worries to rest.

Answer

typically not. unless as marcy stated, with hemorrhoids (aka piles). i assume what you're referring to is bright red blood. this is from the lower part of the gastrointestinal system. seeing your doctor would be a good idea.

more seriously, darker, tar-like stools are usually an indication of a more serious problem. these stools tend to be sticky and is black in colour due to the red blood cells being broken up by your body's enzymes and stomach acid. this should be checked out as it may reflect a bleed in your gastrointestinal (GIT) system. eg, a bleeding peptic ulcer, oesophageal bleeds or cancers of the upper GIT.

i doubt heart attacks alone can cause blood in the stools. to answer your question though, most likely however, if it is red blood it isn't serious and is most likely due to piles. it is highly probable that it is not related to your heart attack.
